Landscape
Kuganha is set within a natural wildlife area where animals move through the landscape freely. This is part of the experience. It is also part of the responsibility of staying in a restored conservation landscape.
The lodge sits within a 10,000-hectare private conservancy where wildlife has been reintroduced over time and the land has been given space to recover. Nature is not a backdrop here. It is the foundation of the stay.

Wildlife at Kuganha
Kuganha is home to Big Five wildlife, including elephant, rhino, buffalo, Cape leopard and lion. Predator areas are managed in accordance with Western Cape conservation legislation, within extensive protected tracts that allow for natural movement while supporting ecological balance and guest safety. This approach forms part of the wider conservation management of the reserve, where wildlife encounters are guided, respectful and professionally handled.
The lodge itself is designed around this setting. Suites and lodge spaces are carefully placed within the landscape, allowing the Karoo veld, acacia riverbeds, open plains and wildlife to remain present around the guest experience. Animals may be seen near the lodge, along pathways, at water points or from the privacy of a suite. This closeness is part of Kuganha’s sense of place. It is also why movement is managed with care.

Guest safety
Guests are asked to remain within designated lodge areas, keep a safe distance from all wildlife and never approach, feed or attempt to attract animals. Wildlife should not be disturbed for photographs. Food should not be left outside the suite. Doors and windows should be kept closed when required, especially at night.
Potentially dangerous wildlife in the broader reserve environment may include elephant, buffalo, rhino, hippo, Cape leopard, lion in managed predator areas, snakes and insects. These animals are part of the natural system of the reserve and are respected as such. Guests are guided on how to move through the lodge environment safely and should always follow the advice of guides, lodge staff and the private concierge.

After dark at Kuganha
After dark, movement is arranged through the private concierge, with an escort or guide provided when required. Guests are also encouraged to use a torch at night and to remain aware of their surroundings.
If wildlife is encountered unexpectedly, the guidance is simple. Stay calm. Keep your distance. Do not run. Do not shout. Do not make sudden movements. Slowly move away without turning your back, find a safe area and inform lodge staff immediately.
