The Essence of Kuganha
This land had lost its natural rhythm. It had been pushed too hard for too long. Indigenous vegetation stripped back, overgrazed and over-farmed by generations of use. The safari animals that once roamed here freely were shot out over 275 years ago by colonial hunters. And then, slowly, it was given the chance to return to itself.
Through decades of committed conservation, rewilding the landscape, restoring indigenous habitat and reintroducing wildlife, the land began to come back. Not forced. Just given space.
That is what the reserve is. A place that was restored – not by force, but by care, patience and the simple act of letting nature lead again.

As the largest tents on the African continent, each private restoration suite spans a minimum of 320 sqm and has been designed as a complete environment for rest, comfort and renewal.

The story beneath it all
Kuganha began with a simple belief: when nature is given the space to return, remarkable things happen. The restoration of this landscape became the inspiration for the restoration guests experience here today.

Rewilding the karoo
Kuganha is set within a 10,000-hectare rewilded Big 5 conservancy, where the landscape has been restored to allow nature to flourish once again. As the land has recovered, the Big 5 and many other wildlife species have returned, creating a thriving wilderness.
